I’m sure hormones, which are influenced by emotions, play a role in the complex organization we call life. I’m sure science will learn some of the details of how hormones interact. However I’m confident such discoveries will not reveal a mechanical, deterministic process that can be described by mathematical formulas. The difference between life and non life is that life responds rationally and purposefully to stimuli, and it sometimes surprises us with unpredictable creativity.

You speak of selection - natural selection, sexual selection and even artificial selection. I’m sure they all play a role in evolution and living systems, but they do not create anything. I have become so disgusted with the way materialists have tried to impose the “random mutation and natural selection” formula upon us an explanation for biological creativity, that I have an averse reaction to the mere mention of any kind of biological “selection“. I can think of only three explanations for the ORIGIN of biological novelty --(1) accident, (2) the result of mechanical, deterministic processes, or (3) the result of intelligent, purposeful organization. I believe life is to some extent constrained by its past, but still has some ability to change responsively. Life designs itself, in purposeful response to the needs of the organism. Accidents result in defects. I do not see the organizing intelligence of life as supernatural -- any more than I view the ability of my body to unconsciously respond to daily changes in the environment as supernatural. Furthermore such responses appear too variable to be regarded as automatic.

The study of hormones will reveal valuable information, depending upon whether the context in which they are studied is valid. Both the accidental and the view of life as a mechanical, deterministic process will not lead anywhere, IMHO.

some intriguing hypotheses there, Andrew! I don't have much to say yet-- no time to really read deeply-- but I was tickled by your constellations of male and female types, and your idea of "naturally occurring complimentary counterparts."

See-- speaking for myself, as a (probably by your theory) high-T-high-E female, the last thing I want around me would be a low-T-low-E male-- or female. I could only pair up well with a TE man-- or woman. That's not because of evolutionary imperatives it's because of my own intellectual, interpersonal, and personal satisfaction needs. Cognitive stuff.

Let's remember that a great deal of our environment, as humans is cultural. And we create culture-- we create our own environment, which we then respond to, in presumably Darwinian ways-- which then responds to us.

More, I hope, later.
